Pulmonology is a sub-specialty of Internal Medicine. Pulmonologists specialize in diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract. Common signs or symptoms of respiratory diseases such as: an abnormal CXR or CT scan, chronic cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, or recurrent lung infections may prompt your primary care physician to refer to a pulmonologist.

Pulmonologists use many different diagnostic tools to evaluate the structure and function of the lungs. Commonly, patients are asked to have a chest x-ray and basic breathing tests. A description of common diagnostic tests is briefly mentioned below.
